Neuroscience: The Surprising Benefits of Visceral Fat
A new study from Toho University in Japan, published in GeroScience, reveals that visceral fat, the deep fat surrounding internal organs, plays a vital role in maintaining brain health. The research highlights that some belly fat is beneficial due to its connection with producing the protein CX3CL1, which helps maintain levels of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a crucial protein for memory, learning, and mood regulation. Low BDNF levels are associated with cognitive conditions like dementia and depression. The study tracked mice of different ages and found that the production of CX3CL1 declines with age, paralleling cognitive decline. However, restoring this protein in older mice improved their BDNF levels. While a certain amount of belly fat is beneficial for brain health, excess visceral fat is linked to serious health risks including heart disease, diabetes, and various cancers. Thus, maintaining a balance is key. Experts recommend a holistic approach to overall health, incorporating a nutrient-rich diet, physical activity, social connections, stress management, adequate sleep, and cognitive engagement.
